Westminster Road Runners Newsletter
January-April, 2008

Dues for 2008, which are now due, are as follows: $5 for students (21 and under); $10 for adults; and $15 for family groups. Entry fees for regular races are $1 for members ($2 limit for a family group) and $2 for non-members. Entry fees for special races are included on the entry form, in the race information, or on the club's web page (www.carr.org/~wrrc).

Upcoming Events:

Tuesday, January 1, 12:00 noon, WINFIELD MILE, South Carroll High School, Winfield. At the start of a new year, it is time to finish matters from the old one. On Labor Day, which occurs on the first Monday in September, Alan Pobletts, 410-549-1873, finished second in his age group in a race run at Liberty High School. Due to the fact that the race organizers took longer to determine who won what than Alan will take after this race, he left before he got his award. Thus after the first WRRC race of the year, Alan will get one award and distribute many others. Note that it's normally a good idea to register for the race early enough to traverse the mile to the starting line before people start running towards you. Regular fees.

Sunday, January 13, 12:00 noon, MIGHTY MEDFORD FREEWAY 5K, Avondale and Stone Chapel Roads, Westminster. With the pro football playoffs, minus the Ravens and Redskins, on TV this afternoon, today's race is for the fast of feet. Tom Yinger, 410-857-2930, is the new race director for this venerable production. Come see what new things, if any, Tom has awaiting you. Regular fees.

Sunday, February 3, 12:00 noon, BEAR RUN FOUR MILER, Pleasant Valley Fire Hall, Pleasant Valley. You will certainly be able to determine who went south during the McDaniel College January Term just completed. He'll be the one with the tan, something not found on most of the rest of those present today. Sam Alspach, 410-875-2621, will also be glad to tell you about how warm the water was. Regular fees.

Sunday, February 24, 8:00 am, TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP TEN MILE RUN, Howard Community College, Columbia. For the third time in semi-recent memory, the race was not held in 2007, due to concern that it might snow that day. Scott Kohr, 410-875-3845 or sdkohr@hotmail.com, thus rightly notes that no one beat us in 2007, and he is ready to invent a team of twelve or more male and three or more female runners to continue that streak, if one year can be called a streak. The club will pay for your entry fee, Scott will organize transportation, and you'll have to go to bed early the night before.

Saturday, March 1, 9:00 am, FLYING FEET 5K, Bear Branch Nature Center, Westminster. If the name Hashawa causes you to imagine horrible hills, difficult terrain, and image-ruining slow times, relax. Dave Griffin, 410-857-4974, promises to produce a much better behaved course for you. Regular fees.

Sunday, March 16, 9:00 am, FOUR MILE PREDICTED TIME RUN, F&M Manufacturing Company, Tech Court, Westminster. Since both Easter and Daylight Savings Time come early this year, it's probably a good time to be sure that you can actually tell what time it is. When you register, simply indicate what time you think it will take you to run four miles, leave your watch with Dave Herlocker, 410-848-8332, and see if you can find him after the race to reclaim your watch. The best predictors win. Regular fees.

Saturday, March 29, 9:00 am, MCDANIEL COLLEGE 5K TRACK RUN, Bair Stadium, McDaniel College, Westminster. Skip Fennell, 410-848-8991, is almost finished with his term as president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, otherwise known as the NCTM, and he is really looking forward to working with smaller numbers, both in terms of participants and race laps, that he has encountered recently. After the race he will be present at Baughers to give his "State of the Pancakes" address. Regular fees.

Saturday, April 5, 9:00 am, RACE FOR THE STARS 5K RUN/WALK, Century High School, Eldersburg. This race is a fund raiser for a local softball team, using a course similar to one used in the Twilight Series. Mark Sobota, 410-833-0346 or msobota1@verizon.net is the contact person. Entry forms will be available on the web page and through the mail.

Wednesday, April 16, 7:00 pm, MAIN STREET MILE, Westminster. Another spring brings another mad dash down the Main Street Hill. The shirts are keepers, the ice cream and toppings are yummy, and one of these years someone may actually break the course records, which are older than many of the runners. Entry forms will be available on the club's web site, through a large mailing, and at club races. The DEADLINE for submission of paper entry forms is APRIL 1. Beth Weisenborn, 717-677-6883 or wrrc.web@gmail.com, will close the computer door when the 700 runner limit--which includes both the first, timed section and the second, fun run section--is reached.

Future Events:

May--Sandymount 4 Mile Run, CCYSB 5K, and the start of the Twilight Series. June--The Twilight Series continues.

July--WDF 5K and still more Twilight Series.

August--The Twilight Series ends, the winners get goodies, and everyone gets to run on Kowomu Trail.
