Westminster Road Runners Newsletter General News Dues for 2007, which are now due, are as follows: $5 for students (21 and under); $10 for adults; and $15 for family groups. Entry fees for regular races are $1 for members ($2 limit for a family group) and $2 for non-members. Entry fees for special races are included on the entry form, in the race information, or on the club's web page (www.carr.org/~wrrc).
Monday, January 1, 12:00 noon, WINFIELD MILE, South Carroll High School, Winfield. After a really tough weekend, it's time to roll out of bed to start the new year by running from beautiful downtown Winfield to South Carroll High School. For many it may just be an effort to get back to the car that brought them to this race. For others it will be a chance to attack the goodies that Alan Pobletts, 410-549-1873, has brought from the Wal-Mart after-Christmas sale. Regular fees. Sunday, January 14, 12:00 noon, MIGHTY MEDFORD FREEWAY 5K, Avondale and Stone Chapel Roads, Westminster. If the weather is still unusually warm in mid-January, you can get a drink at the bathtub located near the starting line. If it finally gets cold, you can admire the ice patterns on the spigot. No matter what the weather, the course is flat, except for that nasty hill at the turnaround, and Dave Griffin, 410-857-4974, will gladly take your money. Regular fees. Sunday, February 4, 12:00 noon, BEAR RUN FOUR MILER, Pleasant Valley Fire Hall, Pleasant Valley. Unfortunately the model train set, which was available for viewing during the Christmas holidays, has been retired for the season. You can, however, now find a place to park in the fire hall lot. The course is out-and-back, the fees are regular, and Sam Alspach, 410-875-2621, can tell you all about the trip he took during January. Sunday, February 25, 8:00 am, TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP TEN MILE RUN, Howard Community College, Columbia. This race is our only "away" trip for the year, and Scott Kohr, 410-857-3845 or sdkohr@hotmail.com, is the coordinator, assuming that the recent arrival of the latest Kohr hasn't made him completely uncoordinated. We need twelve male and three female runners, preferably more, to run against other clubs for the glory of the WRRC. The club will pay for your entry fee, Scott will organize transportation, and you'll need to get up really early for this one. Saturday, March 10, 9:00 am, FOUR MILE PREDICTED TIME RUN, Tech Court, Westminster. This race is truly one that anyone can win, since the top prizes--which in the past have included instant coffee, frozen pies, and buffalo meat--are awarded to those who finish closest to their predicted times. Dave Herlocker, 410-848-8332, will collect the regular fees and will admonish all entrants to leave their watches either in their cars or with him. Saturday, March 31, 9:00 am, MCDANIEL COLLEGE 5K TRACK RUN, Bair Stadium, McDaniel College, Westminster. After several months of being president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Skip Fennell, 410-848-8991, returns to his true talent, counting backwards as runners go around and around and around him. Join him after the race, run with regular fees, to watch him pour syrup around and around and around pancakes down at Baugher's. Saturday, April 14, 10:00 am, THE JOANNE LYNAM MEMORIAL 5K RUN/WALK, Shiloh Middle School, Hampstead. The race, which costs $10, raises money for a scholarship in the name of Joanne Lynam, formerly a teacher at Shiloh Middle. Diane Spalt, 717-993-8442, will place an entry form on the club's web site. Forms will also be available at club races. Wednesday, April 18, 7:00 pm, MAIN STREET MILE, Westminster. It's been a long time since any male has come close to a time of four minutes or any female has come close to a time of four minutes and forty seconds for this charge down Main Street from the east ridge to the library. This year everyone gets shirts and ice cream, a really good deal for a $7 entry fee. Entry forms will be available on the club's web site and also in paper form. The DEADLINE for mail-in entry forms is APRIL 1. After that time entries will be accepted on-line until a limit of 700 is reached. THERE WILL BE NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION!!!! Direct questions about race applications to Beth Weisenborn at weisenbo@msu.edu and about anything else to Dave Herlocker at 410-848-8332.
