Westminster resident averages 7:06 per mile, tops in class of Carroll County

BALTIMORE, 10/20 -- WRRC member Gary St. Onge took longer than most to sign up for the inaugural Baltimore Marathon, but he managed to finish ahead of almost everyone.

St. Onge, 51, of Westminster, signed up just three days before race day, booked a hotel room near the starting line with his wife, Sharon, and showed up Saturday morning ready to race. More ready, in fact, than 5,138 finishers.

St. Onge's time of 3 hours, 6 minutes and 9 seconds (3:06:09) was good for third place in the 50-54 age group and 80th-place finish overall. St. Onge, along with Greg Zaruba, were the only two local runners to crack the top 100.

St. Onge was the first of 83 marathon runners from Carroll County to cross the finish line. The split was pretty even between the sexes, with 48 men and 35 women finishing. There were also five local groups that took part in the Geico Direct Team Relay. The top local team was Team Strikers, of Sykesville, 3:55:57. Other team finishers included Lady Cats (Hampstead), First Timers (Finksburg), Quazar (Westminster) and XXXV (Westminster).

St. Onge, though, didn't need any relief during any of the 26.2 miles and ran a smart race throughout. He started conservatively through the first four miles and didn't pick up a race pace until mile eight.

Sykesville's Coleman first Carroll female, 8th female overall

 Crosses line in 3:11:17

BALTIMORE, 10/20 -- After winning the female title in the Howard County Striders' Metric Marathon just 13 days earlier, Sykesville resident Lisa Coleman averaged 7:18 per mile to lead the 35 Carroll County women marathon finishers Saturday in the inaugural Baltimore Marathon.

Westminster's Kathryn Winkel, 23, was second in Carroll competition and 405th overall in 3:30:53. Sherry Clower was third in 3:58:51, an average of 9:07 per mile.

RaceDay Ramblings

Some say it's a shame Dave Herlocker is unable to run as fast as he used to since the accident several years ago. That's certainly true, but he was the only one in his right mind enough Saturday to distinguish non-WRRC marathoners at the Baltimore Marathon. His presence and support at the finish line was invaluable.

Thanks to Dave, we can give well-deserved recognition to Chris Chattin. Chattin was the top American to cross the finish line, placing fifth overall in 2:29:15 ...

Westminster High graduate Mark Gilmore finished 12th in 2:41:13 ...

Jim Lebo, of Shrewbury, Pa., who posted a record-setting victory at this year's Bachman Valley Half-Marathon, was 17th overall in 2:45:13 ...

Westminster High graduate Steve Kartalia, 46th overall in 2:58:58 ...
