Spring is Here! 10K, 6 April 2008.
Hawkins, Hall win 10K road race.
CUMBERLAND – Jaron Hawkins and Maureen Hall cruised to the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, in the inaugural Spring is Here! 10K (6.2-mile) race Sunday in Cumberland.
Hawkins, 25, of Frostburg, led the field from the start and finished in 33 minutes and 59 seconds. He clocked the first mile in 5:14, about 25 seconds ahead of Jeremy Rice (5:39) and David Mertz (5:44).
Rice, 26, of Frostburg, finished second overall in 35:58 while Mertz, 27, of Cumberland, was third in 38:16. All three used the race, plus a 10-mile warmup and a six- to eight-mile cooldown as part of a final long run before the Boston Marathon on April 21. With a mile to go on the out-and-back Mason Road course with rolling hills, Hawkins was at 28:32 through 5.2 miles and averaging 5:29 per mile while holding a lead of 1:47 over Rice. Hawkins clocked a 5:27 final mile to put the finishing touches on his fifth victory of the year.
Hall, meanwhile, put in some extra distance of her own on her way to setting the women’s standard for the course for future years. The LaVale resident made a turn onto Bealls Mill Road and traveled more than a mile uphill. The problem was that Hall, 43, was the only runner to go that way as the course was run entirely on Mason Road. She realized her mistake in time to retrace her steps and finish nearly seven minutes ahead of the runner-up female. Hall stopped the clock in 51:43, an 8:20 pace which belies her smooth start at 6:33 for the first mile.
Ashley Emerick, 14, of Rawlings, placed second in the women’s category by finishing in 58:25. Brooke Lancaster, 15, of Cumberland, was third in 62:00.
