Mighty Medford 5K, 13 January 2008. While the day was chilly and windy, the running at the front was hot, as Justin Fritzing and Sherry Stick set course records at the Mighty Medford Freeway 5K, held on January 13. When Karsten Brown identified Fritzing and Chris Scheaffer prior to the race as being really fast, it seemed logical that they would set the early pace and that it would be fast. Since they passed the one mile mark in 5:05--thirty seconds ahead of Karsten, Tim Eggers, and Winfield Mile winner Victor Cretella--Karsten's course record of 17:36, set last year, seemed to be in jeopardy. Blasting up the hill prior to the turnaround as if it weren't there, Fritzing and Scheaffer passed the two mile mark in 10:35, faster than the one mile time for a number of runners still on the front half of the course. By this time Karsten trailed by over forty seconds, with Eggers and Cretella following him. After the turn from Medford onto Avondale, Fritzing increased his pace and established a small but definite lead over Scheaffer, a lead which he increased to seventeen seconds at the finish line. Both Fritzing and Scheaffer bested Karsten's record time from last year, with Karsten finishing a minute behind Scheaffer, in the second of three races he ran on Sunday. John Way, who also went to Columbia for another race, finished as the top masters runner, with Bill Kelvey finishing as the first of the fifties crowd and Bob Gurtler, the oldest runner in the race, finishing as the first in the Social Security class. Sam Case, while finishing last, had the cutest dog--Libby, a formerly female golden retriever puppy--in the field. Stick, making her first appearance since she won the entire race in 2003, was sixth overall at the one mile mark in 5:37, a minute ahead of three time female winner Tina McCubbin, with Karen Young, Sherry Clower, and new mom Chrissy Pennington also in the top five. At the two mile mark Stick's time of 11:53 put her in sixth place overall, with no female competition in sight. Her finishing time of 19:01 bested her race winning time from 2003 by ten seconds. Since 2002 she and Tina McCubbin, who finished second in 21:53, have each won this race three times. The only time neither won, in 2005, neither ran. McCubbin finished thirteenth overall, fifty seconds ahead of Karen Young with Sherry Clower a close fourth. Amy Morrow Funk, who finished as the fifth female, was the top masters runner, with Dee Nelson finishing as the best of the sixties crowd and Mary Podbelsky finishing at the head of the fifties gang. The next race will be the Bear Run Four Miler--to be held at the Pleasant Valley Fire Hall in Pleasant Valley at noon on Sunday, February 3, also known as Super Bowl Sunday.
