McDaniel 5K Track Run, 30 March 2008.
Stick, Way lead track pack in 5K.
WESTMINSTER – Eldersburg resident Sherry Stick took the lead 500 meters into the 5K (3.1-mile) track race Saturday at McDaniel College and had little need to look back, leading a field of 29 runners to the finish line in 19 minutes and 9 seconds.
Stick, 29, of Eldersburg, took her third women’s title of the year in Westminster Road Runners Club competition. She also won the New Year’s Day Winfield Mile and the Mighty Medford Freeway 5K just 12 days later.
But Stick didn’t have much in the way of competition after the first 1:50, where she took the lead 100 meters before pacing the field through the first full lap of the race. She was consistently at about 90 seconds per lap through the first eight laps of the 12.5-lap race. She started to pick up the pace afterward, focusing on the person in front of her. Stick lapped 23 of her fellow 28 competitors on the 400-meter oval.
Debbie Flynn, 51, took second in the women’s field in a respective 21:23, outdistancing the No. 3 woman, Sherry Clower, by 1:29. Clower, 36, was 14th overall in 22:52.
Club member John Way, 42, was second overall and won the men’s title in 19:46. It was the fifth try for a win in a WRRC race this year for the Montgomery County resident. He was the sixth fastest male in both the Winfield Mile and Mighty Medford Freeway 5K, where he finished in 19:49 to Stick’s 19:01. He was second overall on Super Bowl Sunday in the Bear Run 4-miler in Pleasant Valley and placed third in the club’s Predicted Time Run 4-miler on March 16.
Way was pushed the entire way and earned the victory, edging Eric Burris, 47, who finished in 19:54. Kishan Gajera, 17, was the third male to cross the finish line, stopping the clock in 20:24.
Right behind Gajera was James Moreland, the men’s 50-59 age group, in 20:28. Dan Replogle was second in the age group in 21:28 while Joe Loveland took third in 23:09.
Jim Bullock, 65, took the men’s 60-69 age group title in 22:26, placing 13th overall. Bob Sommerville, 60, was second in 30:46. Sommerville was, however, the first post-Twilight Series club picnic host to finish.
Race director Skip Fennell, a fellow academic along with the late Dave Herlocker, asked the intimate band of harriers for a brief moment of silence for Herlocker, who died unexpectedly March 21 at his home in Westminster. The track run was the first club race since Herlocker’s passing.
Complete results can be found online at www.carr.org/~wrrc. The next club race is set the Race for the Stars 5K run/walk for 9 a.m. April 5 at Century High School in southern Carroll County. Call Mark Sobota at 410-833-0346 or e-mail msobota1@verizon.net for more information.
