Bear Run 4-mile Run, 3 February 2008.
Spradlin, Gruber Capture Bear Run Event.
Kevin Spradlin, living now in Cumberland after returning from the heartland, and Kelly Gruber, girls cross-country coach at Winters Mill, finished as the top runners in the Bear Run Four Miler, which served many as a preliminary sporting activity on this year's Super Bowl Sunday.
With sunny and pleasant conditions helping to produce a much larger field than last year, when winds threatened to blow paper money from the cash box into the goose pond near the starting line, Spradlin led the throng through the two blocks of downtown Pleasant Valley and into the countryside.
By the time the field reached the one mile mark and numerous barking dogs, Spradlin's time of 6:15 gave him a small but permanent lead over masters runners John Way, Bill Stahr, and John Schmitt,and female leader Gruber.
The most interesting part of the race occurred when traffic coming from church services in Pleasant Valley forced several runners off the road, with Dave Ramsey getting clipped by the outside mirror of a green car with handicapped plates.
Spradlin finished eighteen seconds ahead of Way, with Stahr, Schmitt, and Scott Koenig finishing in the top five. Bob Gurtler, the oldest finisher in the race, was not the last. In addition he donated several dollars to the club treasury when he refused change from the five dollar bill he presented at registration.
Gruber ran within a minute of the lead for the whole race and finished nearly two minutes ahead of Tina McCubbin, who won this race in 2004. Sherry Clower, Julie Haddaway. and Sarah Schumaker also finished in the top five. Dorothy Carpenter finished as the first masters runner, Vicki Borders finished as the top 50 and over runner, and Chrissy Pennington ran faster this year, pushing young Sadie in a baby jogger, than she did last year, when carrying the aforementioned young Sadie.
