Women's Distance Festival Run, 15 July 2007. Tacy Feliciano from the Howard County Striders captured the WRRC version of the Women's Distance Festival, held at Union Mills on July 15. Feliciano, who co-directed the massive HCS race at Columbia, was much more relaxed for this race, and she quickly ended the suspense about the winner as the field of fifty-three headed up Old Hanover Road to Deep Run Road. With only former South Carroll runner Lindsay Warfield offering any competition, Feliciano blasted by the one mile mark in a time of 6:12, 18 seconds ahead of Warfield and over a half minute ahead of Becky Leathers, last year's winner. The rest of the top runners included masters runner Joanne Grant, former McDaniel runner Kelly Gruber, and Saleema Ross. Feliciano continued to expand her lead on the way to the turnaround, and by the time she reached the one mile to go mark in 13:31, her lead over Warfield had doubled to thirty-five seconds. Trailing those two was a pack of Grant, Leathers, and Gruber, with Ross still in sixth. With no one to push her, Feliciano still ran the fastest last mile in the field to finish in 20:04. Warfield, who ran the second half of the race all by herself, finished well ahead of Gruber, who will be the girls cross-country coach at Winters Mill High School this fall, and who torched Grant, the first masters runner, and Leathers to finish comfortably in third. Although many of the best female Twilight Series runners were not present, the WRRC showed its depth, or the fact that most people can't find Union Mills, by relying on Becky Leathers, Maggie Leathers, and Amy Morrow Funk to retain the famed Galinaitis traveling trophy for yet another year. Since the club has retained rights to the trophy every year of the present century, Liuda Galinaitis has become so confident about retaining it that she does not even bother to bring it with her to the race. 1) Westminster Road Runners Club, WRRC; 2) Howard County Striders, HCS; 3) Montgomery County Road Runners Club, MCRRC.
