Runnymede 8K/2, 9 August 2007. On a dark and stormy night, Arthur Leathers and Sherry Stick repeated as Twilight Series Winners by finishing first in the rain-shortened Runnymede 8K race. With hot and humid weather dominating many activities during the days prior to the race, there always existed the possibility that the race could be shortened, canceled, or rescheduled. With the passage of showers at noon on race day, however, the temperature dropped from really hot to merely warm, and it looked as though the focus on race night would be on who ran better that night. A few minutes before race time, with the field gathered at the starting line, the sky got dark, and word came from someone's car radio that storms were fast approaching. After a quick huddle, the Series director and Race director decided to chop the distance in half to 4K (or 8K/2), and off went a field of slightly more than fifty. Arthur Leathers, Karsten Brown, Jordan White, W. C. Knight, Dan White, and Jesse Henderson got the farthest, somewhere past the 1K mark, before the heavens opened with wind and rain, but fortunately no thunder and lightning. Leathers and Brown found the 2K mark painted on the road, made the turn correctly, and saved the field the experience of running halfway into Pennsylvania, dripping as they went. During the last hill on Bear Run Road, Leathers pulled away from Brown, to win in a time of 13:33 to Brown's 13:38. He thus won both his fourth race of the summer and the entire Twilight Series, repeating his Series win of 2006. Knight and the two Whites finished under fifteen minutes, as most of the field obtained PR's, since hardly anyone runs a 4K road race. John Way finished as the tenth male and first masters runner, James Moreland finished as the eleventh male and first 50-59 age runner, and Skip Fennell finished as the thirtieth male and first 60 and over age runner. As she has most of the summer, Sherry Stick ran near the front of the pack, finishing seventh overall in a time of 15:20, two minutes ahead of Tina McCubbin. Stick finished the series with four wins and a second place in the 2 mile track run. Like Leathers she not only won this summer's Twilight Series but repeated for the second year in a row. Mira Foote, who finished third, "ran the table" by finishing as the first masters female runner in all six TWS races. Chris Reese finished fourteenth as the first female 50-59 runner. The age group results will be posted by Series Director Lauren Reese. Anyone with questions should contact her at lcreese4@hotmail.com. The series featured large fields at all the races, and despite the rain at the last race, the weather was generally good. The race premiums, presented to anyone running and/or working at five or more of the races, were distributed to many individuals at Runnymede by Chris Reese. Anyone who did not receive one at that race, or who wishes to see if any extra jackets can be purchased, should contact Chris at 410-848-3216.
