Pleasant Valley 4-miler, 26 July 2007. Jared Welsh, a recent graduate from FSK (Francis Scott Key High School), and Sherry Stick, who recently celebrated five year's employment at CLV (Carroll Lutheran Village), finished as the top runners in the Pleasant Valley Four Mile Run, the fifth in this summer's Twilight Series. With Arthur Leathers, winner of the last three races, on vacation, Welsh, who has been busy this summer preparing to run cross-country for Iona College this fall, had no real help in setting the pace for the field of over ninety, another record field in a summer of wonderful attendance at the TWS races. By the time runners reached the one mile mark in the out-and-back course, Welsh's time of 5:08 gave him a nine second lead over Jordan White, with Kurtis Lunz, Dan White, and Victor Cretella also in the top five. Karsten Brown, who continues to win the award for the runner with the most weekly mileage and the driver with the longest driving distance, was sixth in 5:32. During the portion of the course leading to and returning from the turnaround, Welsh removed the concept of doubt from the race results. At three miles his time of 16:14 was over 50 seconds faster than Brown's, who moved from sixth to second during that portion of the race. The two Whites and Lunz occupied the third through fifth positions, with Cretella in sixth. Welsh finished over a minute ahead of Brown in a time of 21:50, less than a 5:30 pace. While not a course record, it was indicative of a dominant performance. Jordan White finished forty seconds behind Brown, with Lunz, Dan White, and Cretella holding their places. Hans Rupenthal finished as the first male masters runner in tenth place, James Moreland finished as the first in the 50-59 age category in twelfth place, and Jim Bullock, hampered by a hamstring problem, finished first in the 60 and over category in forty-sixth place. Diana Pool, who won this race outright last year, and Sherry Stick, who had won the female division several times in the past, passed through the first mile together in 5:53, with Westminster High School runner Ali Thompson nearly a minute behind, ahead of Tina McCubbin and Ashley Baker. At the three mile mark Pool had a narrow lead over Stick, a situation which changed dramatically in the last half-mile as the former middle distance runner from Salisbury hit the sprint button to win by thirteen seconds in a time of 24:44. Stick and Pool finished sixth and seventh overall in the race. Baker charged through the last mile to finish as the third female for the second race in a row. McCubbin finished fourth, and recent Winters Mill graduate Kristen O'Brien edged Jennifer Ziolkowski for fifth. Mira Foote finished tenth as the first masters runner for the fifth race in a row, Dee Nelson finished twelfth as the first in the 60 and over category, and Mary Rodbielski finished twenty-sixth as the first in the 50-59 category. The Twilight Series concludes with the Runnymede 8K, to be held at Runnymede Elementary School at 7:00 pm on August 9.
