FSK 6K, 12 July 2007.
Leathers, Stick Win at FSK.

Arthur Leathers and Sherry Stick defended their titles at the FSK 6K by outlasting stiff competition in the fourth of this summer's Twilight Series races.

Running on home territory, Leathers, a rising senior at FSK, and Rob Kelvey, a former Westminster High runner, led a record field of eighty-three past the 2K mark, one third of the way, in 6:34. Trailing them were Colin Fearns in 6:47 and Jordan White, WC Knight, CJ Naper, and Karsten Brown, all under 7:00.

By the time the last of the pack had passed the water stop and 2K split station, the leaders had returned from the turnaround, with Leathers, 13:38, leading cross-country teammate Fearns by seven seconds. Kelvey, 13:50, had fallen to third, with Brown, 13:54, hot in pursuit.

Although Fearns continued to apply pressure through the last two kilometers, Leathers held onto the lead, winning his third Twilight Series race in a row and solidifying his overall lead position. He broke the course record, which he set last year, the only other time the race had been run at this distance.

Brown overtook Kelvey for third, with Jordan White finishing fifth, giving the FSK contingent three of the top five places. Bill Kelvey, Rob's father, finished as the first masters and 40-49 age runner, James Moreland finished as the first 50-59 age runner, and Skip Fennell emerged for a long absence to finish as the first 60 and over runner.

Sherry Stick, who had one first place and one second place finish before missing the Hashawa race, passed the 2K mark in 7:34, nine seconds ahead of Diana Pool, who won the Hashawa race. Kristin Stromberg was third in 7:50, thirty-five seconds ahead of Kelly Gruber, Tina McCubbin, and Ashley Baker.

Pool soon caught Stick, and by the time the two reached the 4K mark in 15:31, they were over a minute ahead of Stromberg and the rest of the pack. Not until the last hundred meters did Stick surge to a small lead to repeat as the winner in this race, to win her second Twilight Series race of the summer, and to take the overall Series lead.

Baker charged through the last portion of the course to pass Stromberg for third, and Gruber finished fifth. For the fourth race in a row, Mira Foote finished as the top masters and 40-49 age runner. Dee Nelson finished as the top 60 and over runner, and Chris Reese finished as the top 50-59 age runner.

The next Twilight Series race will be held at 7:00 pm at the Pleasant Valley Fire Hall on Thursday, July 26. The race director is Liuda Galinaitis, 410-857-5427 or liuda@carr.org.
