Hashawa 3-mile Trail Run, 28 June 2007.
Leathers, Pool Dominate at Hashawa.

Arthur Leathers, a rising senior at Francis Scott Key High School, won his second Twilight Series race in a row and repeated his 2006 triumph at Hashawa, while Diana Pool, who finished third at the McDaniel track run, this summer's first Twilight Series race, became the third different female winner this summer.

With race director Gary Honeman looking nervously over his shoulder for possible bad weather, a monstrous field of ninety-four lined up on the roadway near the Bear Branch Nature Center, where most of the participants were forced to park, after the small parking lot near the registration pavilion was closed with cones.

Leathers and Colin Fearns, teammates on last year's FSK state championship cross-country team, led the field over the hills and through the swamps, woods, fields, uneven terrain, and cleverly placed tree branches, trunks, and roots, with Leathers winning by twenty-seven seconds over Fearns.

Indicative of the nature of the course, most of the top ten were present or former high school cross-country runners, who thought the course was challenging and well-marked. John Way finished first in the 40-49 age category, James Moreland finished right behind him as the first in the 50-59 age category, and Jim Bullock, subject of a recent runner profile in Dave Griffin's Carroll Country Times running column, finished first in the 60 and over category.

Pool finished with a mighty surge to nip Way and Moreland as the first female finisher, a minute and a half-ahead of Becky Rhodes, aka Becky Alvarez-Rhodes (see the results from the Century race) and/or Becky Alvarez (see the 2007 membership list). Tina McCubbin, Kelly Gruber, and Ashley Baker followed closely behind Becky.

Mira Foote finished as the first masters and first 40-49 age category runner for the third race in a row, Pam Gowen finished first in the 50-59 age category, and Dee Nelson finished first in the 60 and over category.

The next race in the Twilight Series is the FSK 6K to be held at 7:00 pm on July 12 at Francis Scott Key High School in Uniontown. If you have run two or three races so far, if you think you are likely to run at least five of the six, and if you have not given your size for the runner's jacket that will be this year's Series premium to Chris Reese or Liuda Galinaitis, be forewarned. While they are really talented, their talents do not extend to predicting jacket sizes.
