Run with the Knights 5K, 14 June 2007.
Leathers, Stick Capture "Run with the Knights" 5K.
Rising Francis Scott Key senior Arthur Leathers and Eldersburg resident Sherry Stick, last year's overall winners of the Twilight Series, captured the "Run with the Knights" 5K, the second of this summer's Twilight Series races.
Leathers and FSK teammate Colin Fearns, major components of last fall's FSK state cross-country championship team, quickly grabbed the lead from the field of seventy, largest by far in the three years that the race has existed. By the time Leathers and Fearns passed the 2K mark, they had a ten second lead over their closest competitors, lead by Karsten Brown, Darrin Arbaugh, and Juan Cortez.
After the leaders passed the half-way point on Old Liberty Road and began the uphill return portion of the course, Leathers moved into the lead and began to pull away from Fearns. At the same time Brown separated himself from the chase pack and began to overtake Fearns.
Cruising through the neighborhoods adjoining the Linton Springs Elementary and Century High School complexes, Leathers finished comfortably ahead of Brown, with Fearns, Arbaugh, and Cortez using the their track and cross-country speed to finish well ahead of the rest of the field.
Alan Pobletts finished eighth overall as the seventh male and top masters runner, with James Moreland finishing first in the 50-59 category and Jim Bullock finishing first in the 60 and over category.
With Anna Parker, winner of the track run at McDaniel College three weeks ago, home in North Carolina, there was no stopping Sherry Stick in this race, as she ran near the head of the pack the entire race to finish as the top female runner for the third year in a row, the same number of times the race has been run.
Stick finished sixth overall, with a winning margin of two minutes, with Becky Alvarez-Rhodes nipping Stephanie Duncan for second and Tina McCubbin edging Ali Thompson for fourth.
Mira Foote finished eighth as the top masters runner for the second time in this year's Twilight Series races, with Dee Nelson and Ivy Smink finishing in that order as top runners in the 60 and over and 50-59 age groups, respectively.
The next race in the series, hated by some and viewed by others as a true test of "runnerhood," is the Hashawa Trail run, to be held at Camp Hashawa on June 28.
