Twilight Series #1: McDaniel 2-mile Track Run, 24 May 2007.
Allen, Parker Capture Track Run.

Sean Allen, one of Doug Renner's middle distance runners at McDaniel College, and Anna Parker, an NCAA Division I cross-country/track runner at William & Mary, began this summer's Twilight Series with convincing wins in the two mile track run, held on May 24 at McDaniel College's track.

Allen, whose last two 1500 meter runs on the track this spring were in the vicinity of 4:00, grabbed the early lead in the third, men's open, section and set the pace throughout. His finishing time of 9:44 was over forty seconds faster than last year's winning time. Greg Jubb, a rising senior at Loyola Blakefield in Towson, finished second for the second year in a row, with an improvement of thirty-six seconds over last year. He outran Paul Hannsen, formerly of the University of Delaware program and now a coach at McDonough School, by six seconds.

Steve Kartalia, who ran in the open heat for the second year in a row after attaining master's status, ran nearly the same time as he did last year when he won the race and was in contact with Jubb and Hannsen most of the race. Darrin Arbaugh finished fifth by holding off Maurice Pointer, first in the 50-59 age group.

Tim Morgan won the masters section, defined as section one, for the second year in a row by running to a thirty-six second win. His time was eleventh best overall, third best masters, and second in the 50-59 age group. Terry Monn finished ninth in the section, twenty-ninth overall, as the top 60 and over finisher.

In the second section, Anna Parker--who while finishing her fourth year at William and Mary this spring, still has cross-country eligibility remaining and will return to add a psychology minor to her program--and Sherry Stick, who had won this race six of the past seven years, ran long and hard, with Parker winning by six seconds. Stick's finishing time was better than any of her previous winning times.

Diana Pool finished third for the second year in a row, with Brittany Rooks, who can now call herself a teenager, finishing fourth, and Ashley Baker, who recently graduated cum laude from McDaniel College, finishing fifth. Finishing third overall in the section was North Carroll freshman Joey Guthoska, whose time was ninth best overall for males.
When told that he had chased some really fast female runners in his section, he said that his running in practice with Katie Hursey, the county's fastest female distance runner and winner of the state IIIA 1600 meter run this spring, had made used to this situation.

Mira Foote, recovered from a recent injury, finished as the top masters runner, with Dee Nelson leading the 60 and over category and Chris Reese leading the 50-59 category. Running with Chris the whole way, and the major reason that Chris's time was forty-five seconds better than last year's, was daughter Lauren Reese, this year's Twilight Series director. Lauren hopes to see a large field at Century High School on June 14 for the Run with the Knights 5K. Since this race is an out-and-back 5K, there should not be any problems with keeping track of lap counts.
