Mighty Medford Freeway 5K, 14 January 2007.
Brown, McCubbin Win Medford 5K.
On a day warmer than anyone can remember for this race, Karsten Brown and Tina McCubbin triumphed at the Mighty Medford Freeway 5K, held on January 14.
Brown--who has driven from Front Royal, Virginia, in November to win the Union Mills 8K and in December to win the Dancer Dash 10K, was joined at the front of the sixty-three runner pack by Steve Ruckert, winner of this race seven years ago when he was fifty and for a while the oldest winner of a club race, until Joe Loveland won two races when he was fifty-four.
At the one mile mark Brown's time of 5:48 gave him a five second lead over Ruckert, with Bill Kelvey, winner of the Mayberry 4M race in November, third in 6:17, just ahead of Karl Mullinix and Mark Hadley.
Between the one mile mark and the turnaround, a portion of the course which contains the only noticeable hill, Brown shifted into another gear, and by the the time he reached the two mile mark in 11:24, his lead over Ruckert had become forty seconds. Kelvey was in third, another thirty-five seconds back, and Hadley had moved into fourth.
At the finish line Brown's lead was over a minute, with Ruckert, the first masters finisher, a minute ahead of Kelvey, who was followed by Hadley and FSK cross-country coach Dan Replogle. The second through fifth finishers were all masters runners.
The women's race, on the other hand, featured several lead changes. Tina McCubbin, winner of the Mayberry 4 Mile race in November, passed the one mile mark in 6:50, five seconds ahead of Ashley Baker, who won the Fallfest Mile in September. Sherry Clower was third, another forty seconds behind, with masters runner Mira Foote just behind her.
At the two mile mark, however, Baker's time of 13:48 put her seven seconds ahead of McCubbin. During the last mile McCubbin regained the lead, finishing seventh overall in a time of 21:30, with Baker twelve seconds back in the ninth overall position. Clower finished third another minute back, with Stephanie Duncan right behind her, and Mira Foote finished fifth as the first masters runner.
The next club race will be the Bear Run Four Miler, to be held at noon on Sunday, February 4, at the Pleasant Valley Fire Hall in beautiful downtown Pleasant Valley. Following that race there will be a meeting of the planning committee for the Main Street Mile at Liuda Galinaitis's house. Anyone wishing to help in the planning for the MSM is welcome.
