McDaniel 5K Track Run, 31 March 2007.
Cortez Captures Track Run.
Juan Jose Cortez, wearing the uniform of Westminster High's track/cross country teams, dominated a field of thirty-seven at the McDaniel College track as he cruised to a half-lap win in the club's annual 5000 meter track run, held on March 31.
The finish line crew knew that it was going to be a tough day when Cortez, Victor Cretella, and Tom Yinger began to lap runners, in the largest version of this race anyone can remember, well before the end of the first kilometer. After a few laps Cortez broke free from Cretella and Yinger, and from that point he weaved in and out of slower runners, on his way to a forty second win.
Cretella and Yinger, the only runners on the lead lap when Cortez crossed the finish line, finished comfortably in second and third place, respectively. Bill Kelvey and James Moreland, the fastest of the large group of masters runners, also finished in the top five. Jim Bullock, recovered from his fall from a treadmill, finished tenth as the oldest male in the race.
The Baker sisters conducted another clinic on how to run with your sibling until the last fifty meters, with Ashley, deprived of participating on the McDaniel tennis team this spring because of student teaching, edging Allison, an elementary teacher at Parr's Ridge Elementary School in Eldersburg. That rush to the finish gives Ashley a 3-1 edge since last September.
On the same lap with the Bakers at the finish were Dorothy Carpenter and Denean Koontz, with Carol Remy finishing fifth as the first masters runner and Ellen Hocheder finishing seventh as the oldest female in the race.
