Kowomu Trail 5K, 19 August 2007.
Stick Wins Kowomu Race Again.

While the distance was shortened from 4 Miles to 5K because of bridge work on the course, Sherry Stick repeated her 2005 triumph with a twenty second win in the Kowomu Trail 5K, which also served as a forum for the announcement of the 2007 Twilight Series results.

On a cloudy but pleasant morning, Stick grabbed the early lead in the small, 14, but spirited and gender neutral, 7 of each, field as it ran uphill on one of Carroll County's few remaining unpaved roads.

By the time Stick reached the one mile mark in 6:48, she had a seven second lead over Tom Yinger, with Kishan Gayera, John Way, and Ashley Baker the only other runners within a minute.

Fortunately no one ran into the "keep off the bridge" signs, even though the turnaround was measured to be only meters away from the edge of the offending bridge. By the time Stick reached the one mile to go mark in 14:05, Yinger was a mere five seconds behind, Way and Gayera were running together, almost a minute behind the leaders, and Ashley Baker had a twenty-eight second lead over James Moreland.

During the largely downhill last mile, Stick lengthened her lead to twenty seconds as she won this race for the second time. Yinger finished a minute ahead of Way, the first masters finisher, with Gayera a minute ahead of the most excitement the finish line crew saw all day.

During the last mile, Moreland came charging from the rear to catch Ashley Baker, and as they came down the last slope, it appeared that it would be difficult to determine who finished ahead. The bad news for Moreland was that Baker--a recent college graduate, now teaching middle school math in Frederick and coaching the girls cross-country team at Walkersville High School--appeared to be ahead as she crossed the finish line. The worse news for Moreland was that as he leaned for the invisible tape on a downhill slope, his foot caught a depression at the intersection of the gravel and paved portions of the road. He thus did a wonderful imitation of a double somersault dive with one and a half twists, coming to rest on his back, on the pavement, with scratches, impacted stones, and bloody spots galore.

Fortunately the damage was not life-threatening, and at the awards ceremony, he received both a prize for the Kowomu race and an age group award for the Twilight Series. He'll be back.

Although there are a number of events listed on the club calendar for September, the next club-sponsored race is the 25th version of the Bachman Valley Half-Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, September 23.
