Flower & Jazz Festival 5K, 12 May 2007. Mark Hadley, soon to leave the area for an important administrative post at the University of Virginia, and Mindy Bucey, a key member of the Carroll County Youth Service Bureau, captured the top places at the Jazz and Flower Festival 5K, held on May 12. With race director, Gary Honeman, touting her skills prior to the race, it was no great surprise when Minday came by the 3K mark with a sizable lead over Hadley and Paul Kelly. During the second zig-zag trip over the creek, through the woods, and up the hill, Hadley pulled away from Kelly and charged past Bucey. In a race fraught with runners who ran on sidewalks when they should have run on streets and who took the longer loop when the course was measured using the shorter distance, Hadley ran smart, short, and straight, finishing with a twelve second win. Bucey finished second overall as the first female, and she and Hadley got large flower pots. Just about everyone else got smaller plants, thanks to an abundance of them. Hadley also finished as the first male masters runner, and Kelly, who finished a close third, was the first 50s male. John Snowberger finished twenty-eighth overall as the first 60s male. Although Kim Fitzgerald was the second female at the 3K mark, Ashley Baker pulled away from older sister Allison to catch Fitzgerald near the finish to grab second place. With Alison Nations finishing behind Allison Baker (those names are correct, just different), the female portion of the field beat the male portion of the field, using cross-country scoring. Amy Morrow Funk finished as the first masters female, Ivy Smink finished as the first 50s female, and Susan Case finished as the first 60s female. Trooper Jon Hill finished in the top ten overall with his two magnificent dogs. He also informed members of the crowd that he has a six month old, ninety pound puppy in training for future races.
