Dasher Dance 10K, 9 December 2007.
Taylor, Clower Dash Best Through the Rain.

Last week, after an early snowfall, there was some concern that the course used for the Dancer Dash 10K might be too slippery for the intrepid runners or that course director Bob Leatherman might not be able to remark the mile distances and turnaround. When the temperature rose on Saturday, the day before the race, the snow melted, the roads dried, the sun shone brightly, and all was right with the running world.

Unfortunately race day was Sunday, and the race day weather was rainy and raw. The eventual size of the field could have been counted without removing both running shoes, and the times were generally slower than in previous years.

At the one mile mark Ryan Taylor and Tom Yinger, with times of 6:23, were two seconds ahead of John Way. A minute behind them came first female Sherry Clower, pursued by Joe Loveland and Gary Homeman.

At two miles Taylor, with a time of 13:24, still retained his two second lead over Way. Yinger, ten seconds behind Way, was beginning to feel the effects of a very wet shoestring malfunction, something you wouldn't wish on someone you know and love. By the time the lead runners had returned from two romps through the woods coupled with a successful turnaround, Taylor's time of 28:40 with two miles to go had produced a ten second lead over Way and a forty second lead over the unfortunate Yinger.

With nothing dramatic happening during the latter portions of the race, Taylor cruised to his third straight club race victory, with Way, Yinger, Loveland, and Scott Kohr finishing in the male top five. With Arthur Leathers involved in winter track and Karsten Brown (maybe) resting after running the JFK 50 miler and the NCR Trail Marathon on consecutive weekends, Taylor has become the dominant runner during the last part of the year.

Meanwhile, Clower stayed in fourth place overall throughout the entire race, as her margin over female competitors got bigger and bigger. Her times of 15:03 for two miles and 32:03 for two miles to go indicated a steady pace, and her ten minute margin of victory is one of the largest in recent memory. Carole Williamson pulled away from fellow masters runner Debra Leathers after the two mile mark to finish in second.

The WRRC now takes a break for parties and presents. The next event will be the Winfield Mile, a point-to-point race starting at noon on New Year's Day, a Tuesday this year. While registration will be held at the front of the South Carroll High School building, the start is up the road. Every year late arrivals learn that fact to their horror. Race director Alan Pobletts thus urges everyone to arrive early, to bring their dues money for 2008 if they have not yet paid, and to be nice to Jon Hill's furry friends as they charge down the Old Liberty Road race course.
