Bear Run 4-miler, 4 February 2007. On the coldest race day so far this winter, Karsten Brown, running in shorts, outran every other male runner, clad in a variety of outfits, and Ashley Baker, taking a break between tennis seasons, outran a surprisingly large female field to capture the Bear Run Four Miler, held on February 4 in beautiful, downtown Pleasant Valley. As he has done in most of the races he has run recently, Karsten grabbed an early lead and continued to increase it. At the end of the first mile, which he covered in 5:53, his lead over Tom Yinger was thirty seconds, with masters runners Mark Hadley, Bill Stahr, and Gary Honeman in sight of each other but not of Karsten. On his way to the turnaround point, Karsten must have figured that if his competition couldn't handle a 5:53 first mile, they probably couldn't handle a 5:52 second mile, and he was right. His 11:45 time gave him a lead of a minute and fifteen seconds over Yinger, who was ten seconds ahead of Stahr, who had passed Hadley, with Gary Honeman almost a minute behind Hadley. The only good thing about the first two miles in this race was that the wind had been a tailing wind. After the turnaround it became a head wind, and no one, not even Karsten, ran as fast coming in as they went out. The major problem for the field was that Karsten's slow time was faster that anyone else's fast time. Karsten finished in 23:53, over two minutes ahead of Yinger, who was pushed all the way by Stahr and Hadley. Brian Forssen passed Honeman to capture fifth. In contrast to the men's division, the outcome of the women's division was definitely in doubt at the one mile mark, as Ashley Baker, Allison Baker, and Sherry Clower all passed it in 7:25, with no one else in sight. At the turnaround Ashley and Sherry's time of 14:50 was twenty seconds better than Allison's. During the return section of the race, Ashley passed Jon Hill and his two fine looking dogs on her way to a thirty-four second win over Sherry, with Allison another forty seconds back. Chrissy Pennington, now running for two, edged masters runner Lisa Hughes for fourth. The WRRC runs next in a long, 10 miles, early, 8:00 am, and foreign, Howard County, race on February 25 in team championship race we've all grown to know, love, and in some cases ignore. Contact Scott Kohr at 410-857-3845 for registration information. The club will pay for your entry fee, since you'll pay dearly in self-esteem for the privilege of representing us. The next local race will be the predicted time race, run from Tech Court at 9 am on March 10. Top prizes go to the best predictors, and literally everyone has a chance to win.
