Twilight Series #5: Pleasant Valley 4-miler Pool Captures Pleasant Valley Race. Diana Pool became only the third female to capture an open WRRC race as she finished first in a field of forty at the Pleasant Valley Four Mile Run, held on Thursday, July 27, as the fifth in this summer's Twilight Series. At the end of the first mile Pool, FSK runner Jordan White, WHS runner Demetrios Pagonis, and Sherry Stick, herself a two-time winner of open WRRC races, passed the first mile mark in 5:45. Shortly after the turnaround point, Pool accelerated during the mostly downhill third mile to establish a small, but permanent, lead. After Pool passed the three mile mark in 18:00, with the other three runners within twelve seconds of her, it remained to be seen whether she could maintain her lead during the last mile. At the finish she finished two seconds ahead of White, five seconds ahead of Pagonis, and eleven seconds ahead of Stick. For Pagonis it was the second race in a row in which he has finished third overall, and for Stick it was the first time this summer she has not been the first female finisher. Pool's finishing time was eight seconds slower than Stick's from last summer. Bob Leatherman finished sixth overall as the first 50-59 male runner, Jim Bullock finished ninth overall as the first 60-69 male runner, Bob McCubbin finished seventeenth overall as the first 40-49 male runner, and Ray Campbell finished 40th overall as the first 70+ male runner. Stick continues to lead the female overall series with four first place finishes and one second place finish. Ali Thompson finished as the third female, with her mother, Char Thompson, finishing as the sixth female and first in the 40-49 age group. Judith Brennan finished as the eleventh female and first in the 60+ age group, and Chris Reese finished as the fifteenth female and first in the 50-59 age group. At the next and final race in this summer's Twilight Series, the Runnymede 8K-- to be conducted on Thursday, August 10--this year's premium, a runner's bag, will be presented to all who have run and/or worked in five of the races this summer. Anyone with questions should contact Liuda Galinaitis, 410-857-5427, or Chris Reese, 410-848-3216. Twilight Series standings after race #4: FEMALE / MALE (files are PDF)
