Mighty Medford Freeway 5K Shriver, McCubbin Rule at Mighty Medford On a sunny but windy and chilly day Ron Shriver and Tina McCubbin captured first places in the Mighty Medford Freeway 5K, held on January 15. Shriver, who finished third but said he should have won the Winfield Mile held on January 1, made certain that he would win this race by grabbing the early lead and maintaining it throughout the race. At the one mile mark his time of 5:50 gave him a twenty second margin over Alan Pobletts, one of the few brave or misguided enough to run the race in shorts. Trailing at a time of 6:30 were Bill Stahr, Tom Yinger, and Brandon Ingle. After conquering the hill leading to the turnaround, Shriver passed the two mile mark in 12:12, still maintaining a twenty-something second lead over Pobletts. The trail pack had disintegrated by this time, with Stahr five seconds ahead of Yinger and thirty-five seconds ahead of Ingle. During the last mile Pobletts, whose performance at the North Central Trail Marathon qualified him to go to Boston, gradually closed the gap on Shriver. Eventually, though, Shriver's steady pace overcame the late charge, and Shriver--who is soon to go to Hawaii, home of heat problems instead of chill problems--finished with a nineteen second winning margin. Pobletts finished as the first masters runner, with Stahr, who also recently qualified for Boston, pulling away from Yinger and Ingle. Roger Kilgore finished seventh as the first senior runner, and Glenn Smink finished twenty-second as the first veteran runner. McCubbin ended the suspense in the female category by running a consistent pace to leave the competition behind. Her split times of 6:58 for one mile and 13:55 for two miles helped to produce a winning margin of over two minutes. Chrissy Pennington and Sherry Clower ran together the whole race, with Winters Mill student Kristen O'Brien and first masters runner Monika Bachman finishing in the top five. Chris Reese finished as the first veteran runner. There will be an organizational meeting concerning the Main Street Mile--to be held on Wednesday, April 19--after the Bear Run Four Miler, to be held at 12:00 noon at the Pleasant Valley Fire Hall in Pleasant Valley on Sunday, January 29.
