McDaniel Track 5K Run Ali, Stick Capture Track Run. On a breezy and chilly March morning Maksudul Ali (try saying that three times in a row) and Sherry Stick captured the McDaniel 5K track run. From the small field of seventeen, a group containing Ali, Paul Hannsen, Rory Jenkins, Sheldon Degenhardt, and Stick quickly separated themselves as they began to go around and around and around the track. After 2 1/2 laps, 1000 meters, Hannsen, Ali, and Jenkins roared by in 3:15, indicating that the winning time would be between 16 and 17 minutes. As the race continued, the lead three began to lap everyone in the field, causing great consternation to those attempting to keep the various lap counts separate and correct. Although Hannsen led for most of the way, Ali--a midshipman on spring break from the Naval Academy--pulled away in the last lap to win by four seconds, with Jenkins finishing third as the only other runner on the lead lap. Degenhardt finished as the first masters runner, and Stick finished fifth as the first female by multiple minutes. Bob Leatherman and Jim Bullock finished as the top 50's and 60's age runners, respectively. The fate of this race for the next few years is in question, since Skip
Fennell, the chief counter, becomes president of the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics in a few weeks. With his schedule for the next
few years out of the hands of the WRRC, any volunteers who can count
backwards and out of both sides of their mouths at the same time would be
appreciated.
