Mayberry 4-mile Run, 19 November 2006. Bill Kelvey and Tina McCubbin warmed up for Thanksgiving as they roasted the competition at the Mayberry 4 Mile Run, held on November 19. On a chilly but otherwise pleasant morning, Mark Hadley led the field of twenty-one runners from the parking lot at the Runnymede Elementary School in a vain attempt to catch Sam Case and Sam Alspach--led by faithful dog Abby, one of the world's great golden retrievers--all of whom started multiple minutes early. At the one mile mark, Hadley's time of 6:13 gave him a ten second lead over Kelvey, with John Elliott, Karl Mullinix, and James Moreland bunched a few seconds behind Kelvey. Shortly after the one mile mark, Hadley felt a pain in his leg, turned around, and began slowly walking back to his car. At that point Kelvey, who had joined the club that morning, inherited the lead and began to enlarge it. At the three mile mark his time of 20:02 placed him thirty seconds ahead of Elliott, the oldest runner in the race at 68. The Columbia resident is currently ranked first in the male 64-69 age category in the Baltimore-Washington metro area by Washington Running Report. During the last mile no one threatened Kelvey, who finished with a thirty-five second win over Elliott, with Moreland safely in third. Tina McCubbin and Jim Bullock moved past several runners during the second part of the race to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. McCubbin's 6:41 time for the first mile gave her a thirty-five second lead over Chrissy Pennington, who contributed to the race prizes by bringing a pan of home-made banana bread. Several of the runners made moves on the banana bread that were faster than what they did during the race. McCubbin's strong second half was evidenced by her time of 21:17 for three miles, which placed her in fourth place overall and more than a minute ahead of Pennington. In her final mile she held both her overall position and her lead over Pennington, while at the same time cutting the distance between her and Moreland by half. With 17 of the 23 runners being in the masters category, it was not surprising that the top four male finishers were masters. What was surprising is that two of them were over 60. In the female category Carole Williamson, who finished fourth, was the top masters runner.
