Labor Day 5K Rogue Race, 4 Sept 2006 Bazel, Pool Conquer Labor Day 5K. On a bright and reasonably cool day, Graham Bazel from Atholton High School in Columbia, Maryland, and Diana Pool, the girl's cross-country coach at Winters Mill High School in Westminster, Maryland, captured the lead positions in the Labor Day 5K run, sponsored by the Rogue Runners of Eldersburg, Maryland. Grabbing the lead from the 175 runner field, Bazel, who finished second in the state IIA cross-country meet last fall as a freshman, cruised to a sizeable victory over Mike Colaiacovo, a win made interesting only because Bazel initially missed the turn from the road in front of Liberty High School into the finish line area, eventually correcting himself after hearing the screams of finish line officials. Bazel and his teammates attended this race primarily because of the publicity surrounding Andrew Cross, a Liberty runner recently diagnosed with leukemia. Proceeds from a one mile walk, which attracted over one hundred participants, were applied to Andrew's medical expenses. Liberty High School runner Eric Liberatore finished third, in a field loaded with cross-country runners. The first masters runner was the incomparable Neal Riemenschneider, who combined this race with a football referee's job, due to a rain postponement from the preceding weekend, for his Labor Day sporting efforts. Pool and running mate Pam Maldeis, herself a graduate from Liberty High School at the turn of the millennium, combined to dominate the female section. Taking a break from their marathon training, Pool for the Philadelphia Marathon and Maldeis for the Richmond Marathon, they finished in the top ten overall, with Pool's twelve second margin obtained in the last mile. Catherine Lewis finished third, with Jamie Sullivan finishing seventh as the first masters runner. |
