Flower & Jazz Festival 5K, 13 May Griffin, Clark Capture Festival 5K. On a beautiful, sunny, cool Saturday morning, the Flower and Jazz Festival 5K was held as part of Wesminster's annual spring celebration. It was held, however, away from downtown Westminster, using the facilities of the Burk Linear Trail, with proceeds benefitting the Carroll County Youth Services Bureau. If you wonder whether there is a connection between the monetary benefits and the fact that the director of this race, club member Gary Honeman, works for that agency, the answer is a resounding "you betchum, Red Ryder." After the first kilometer masters runners Dave Griffin and Marc Senbusch had separated themelves from the rest of the nearly 50 member field, and as they charged up the hill into the woods on the first of two loops incorporating the Burk Trail, they moved ahead of the pacer, a by this time exhausted Westminster City Policeman, who was stuggling to keep his bicycle ahead of the field. By the end of the first Burk loop, at approximately three kilometers, Griffin had a ten second lead over Sengebusch, which he maintained until the end of the race. With Griffin and Sengebusch the only runners to break the twenty minute barrier, it is interesting that five of the first six finishers were male masters runners, with four of them over fifty, and one, the incomparable Roger Kilgore, over sixty. Finishing just a few seconds behind these old guys was Alexandra Clark, the first female and mother of an infant and two toddlers. She and Chrissy Pennington quickly separated themselves from the other female participants, with Clark leading by a narrow margin at both the three kilometer point and at the finsh line. Dee Nelson finished third as the first masters female and also the first in the sixty and over category. With forty-eight flower pots available for prizes, everyone who remained for the awards ceremony got a prize, whether in the open category, an age group category, or as a random prize. Prior to the five kilometer race there were two shorter races for younger competitors, with all finishers, including a fine looking male golden retriever, getting medals for their efforts. Given the number of competitors and their satifaction with the races, it seems likely that the Flower and Jazz Festival races will return next spring to the Tahoma Farm site.
