Dasher Dance 10K, 10 December 2007. Just as he did last month at Union Mills, Karsten Brown drove from Front Royal, Virginia, and cruised to a sizeable victory. On a sunny day, twenty-two humans and one of the great golden retrievers of our time left the Tech Court starting line with visions of books, other prizes, and chocolate chip cookies dancing in their heads. By the two mile mark, which Brown passed in 11:58, most of the rest of the field had conceded first place to him, as only Westminster High School senior Jacob Sisler, ten seconds behind, and a cluster of Alan Pobletts, Lucas McLellan, and Brendan Dulaney, forty seconds behind, were at all close. With race director Bob Leatherman guarding "Cassie's Corner", all runners safely entered the woods on Beggs Road, found the turnaround, and emerged to do battle with the return hills. At the two miles to go mark , Brown's time of 25:20 gave him a lead of a minute and twenty seconds over Sisler, with Pobletts twenty seconds further back but well ahead of McLellan and Dulaney. Brown finished with a two minute margin, and since Leatherman gave him his choice of not only a book from one prize table but anything from the other prize table, Brown grabbed the collection of Ray Charles DVD's, which he had noticed and coveted earlier. Sisler finished as the only other runner under forty minutes, with Pobletts grabbing third as the first masters runner, comfortably ahead of McLellan and Dulaney. Gary Honeman finished seventh as the first 50's runner, and Jim Bullock finished eighth as the first 60's runner. In what is becoming fairly typical for fall races, the Baker sisters ran together for most of the race, this time at the head of the female pack. This time, however, it was older sister Allison who avenged two earlier defeats by younger sister Ashley to finish first by a second. Chris Hendershott finished two minutes back as the first masters runner, and Chris Reese finished fifth as the first 50's runner. As Karsten drove off to his second race of the day, some of the books and other prizes remained. Such was not the case with Shirley Leatherman's chocolate chip cookies, which were eagerly consumed by runners of both sexes, all ages, and all speeds. The next race is the Winfield Mile, to be run on Monday, January 1, at noon. Registration will occur in front of South Carroll High School. Runners should note that since the race is a point-to-point run, and since the starting line is a mile up Old Liberty Road, it would be a good idea to register as early as possible.
