Bear Run 4-miler Stahr, Scherbarth Win at Bear Run On a dreary, wet day Bill Stahr and Bethany Scherbarth scored easy wins in the Bear Run Four Miler, held on January 29 in Pleasant Valley. Stahr, who had finished third in the Mighty Medford 5K conducted two weeks ago, grabbed the early lead and held it. Reaching the turnaround in under thirteen minutes, he increased his lead throughout the entire second half of the race, fashioning a winning margin of over two minutes. Bobby Ward, who ran the race with the idea of holding to a seven minute per mile pace, was second at the turnaround, with James Moreland right behind him. When Moreland increased the pace, Ward let him go, and Moreland cruised to a thirty second lead to capture second place. Brent Sparks pummelled his father by over ten minutes to finish fourth, with Harold Walsh breaking the eight minute per mile barrier to finish fifth. Scherbarth, who spent most of the fall training for the Baltimore and North Central Trail Marathons, ran in the middle of the field with male runners old enough to be her father. Her slightly less than a nine minute per mile pace produced a winning margin of more than three and a half minutes. It was the first race in which she had ever finished first, and she was amazed at the number of new friends who came to see the apple pie that she was awarded. Liuda Galinaitis finished second as the first masters runner, finishing a half minute ahead of Laura Demers. The mother and daughter team of Lynn Richardson and Beth Weisenborn ran the whole race together, finishing fourth and fifth (or fifth and fourth, depending on your vantage point at the finish line). The next WRRC event will be the MD-DC Ten Mile Team Championship, to be held at 8:00 am on Sunday, February 26, in Columbia. Scott Kohr is constructing a team for the event. The club will pay for your entry fee. The next local race will be a Four Mile Predicted Time Run, to be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, March 4, at the F & M Company on Tech Court.
