Union Mills 5K Run, 4 December 2005 Poulos Captures Union Mills Run On a dreary, cloudy morning Ted Poulos drove from northern Virginia to Union Mills, while others--whose driving distances were much shorter--stayed home. For such a courageous effort, Poulos was rewarded with the first choice of goodies which Chris Reese brought to the race as prizes. After it was decided by mutual consent to shorten the race distance from 8K to 5K because of significant amounts of ice and slush which covered upper portions of the course, the race began up Old Hanover and Deep Run Roads. After sharing the lead with Mary Gruppenhoff for most of the first mile, Poulos passed the mile mark in 6:45, five seconds ahead of Bob Leatherman, with Gruppenhoff and Jim Bullock a few seconds back and Klaus Lemke trailing the lead pack By the time runners returned through the gloom to the one mile to go mark, Poulos had shed all in the trail pack but Bob Leatherman. His time of 14:28 led Leatherman by seven seconds. Meanwhile Bullock had passed Gruppenhoff to hold third place by a margin of fifteen seconds, with Lemke another fifty seconds back. Cruising to the f11inish line, Poulos narrowly missed the twenty-one minute mark, with Leatherman in close pursuit and Bullock another half-minute behind. Gruppenhoff finished in fourth, a minute ahead of Lemke. With all runners safely in, race director Chris Reese presided over the distribution of prizes, keeping the excess for the Dancer Dash 10K, to be held on December 11.
