Twilight Series, Race #2 Run with the Knights 5K, 16 June 2005 Leiter, Stick Capture Knights Run Brian Leiter and Sherry Stick, neither one of whom attended Century High School, captured the Run With the Knights 5K, the second in this year's Twilight Series runs, on June 16. Arthur Leathers and Colin Fearns led the group of forty-six through the Century High neighborhood, and with most of the downhills in the first two kilometers of the race, they blasted by the water stop at 2K in slightly over seven minutes. West Virginia resident Karsten Brown, Leiter, and Stick followed close behind. With much of the field still headed down Old Liberty Road to the turnaround, Leathers charged by the 3K mark, with Leiter and Brown in hot pursuit. Leiter eventually caught Leathers on the uphill stretch in the fourth kilometer of the race and used the speed which gained him a Class AA state title this spring in the 1600 meter run to achieve a five second win in the last five hundred meters. Brown finished a close third, with Fearns and Jared Welsh finishing in the top five of the male division. Stick, who won the overall title in the Mt. Airy Flag Day race on June 11, was never threatened in the female section of the race and maintained a fifth position overall for most of the race, finishing nearly four minutes ahead of Karen Young, who had to work harder to stay ahead of Sherry Clower. FSK runners Mairin Leahy and Becky Leathers also finished in the top five. The top masters runners were largely the older masters runners, with the first three male and two of the first three female masters finishers never to see fifty again. Both Tom Russell and Dee Nelson finished sixth in their gender categories in addition to being the first masters runners. The next Twilight Series race will be the Camp Hashawa Trail Run, to be held at 7:00 pm on June 30 at Camp Hashawa, north of Westminster off Route 97.
