Dasher Dance 10K, 11 December 2005 Spradlin Sprints to Victory at Dancer Dash 10K On a sunny but chilly day, Kevin Spradlin and Tina McCubbin captured the top spots in the Dancer Dash 10K, held on December 11 as the last race of the year for the Westminster Road Runners. Spradlin--who recently returned from serving time in Iraq, Korea, and other distant places--journeyed from Hagerstown especially for this race and was so pumped that he quickly grabbed the lead. At the two mile mark he was fifteen seconds ahead of McCubbin, with Mark Hadley, Doug Preston, and Jim Bullock within a half-minute. After a successful trip into and back from the woods on Beggs Road, Spradlin was the first runner to reach the two miles to go mark. At this point, however, Hadley loomed large in his rear view mirror, a mere eight seconds behind. Preston had separated himself from Bullock, and both were running in isolation by this time. During the last two miles of the race, Hadley closed ground on the hills, while Spradlin pulled away on the flat stretches. Eventually Hadley ran out of hills, and Spradlin used his youth and sprint speed to produce a five second win. Preston finished third, a minute and a half ahead of Bullock, and Klaus Lemke, recovered from his fall marathons, grabbed the fifth male slot. After winning the female division of the last two club races she had entered, Mary Gruppenhoff found herself chasing Tina McCubbin soon after the start. McCubbin was second overall at the two mile mark, with Gruppenhoff a minute behind. Running buddies Erin Surette and Kelsey Sheitlin were two minutes further back, with the talkative twosome of Chris Reese and Liuda Galinaitis happily chatting multiple minutes behind. With two miles to go, McCubbin was fourth overall, with a two and a half-minute advantage over Gruppenhoff. At the finish line her lead was over four minutes. Erin Surette finished ahead of Kelsey Sheitlin for third place, and Chris Reese had more wind left at the finish to finish ahead of Liuda Galinaitis. The new year (and those beloved dues) start on Sunday, January 1, at the Winfield Mile. The point-to-point race starts in beautiful downtown Winfield at noon. Registration and parking occur at South Carroll High School. For more information contact Alan Pobletts at 410-549-1873.
