Hilbert, Hursey Capture Lynam 5K

Jonathan Hilbert and Katie Hursey won the men's and women's divisions of the third Annual Joanne Lynam Memorial 5K Run, held on April 17 at the Shiloh Middle School in Hampstead.

At the end of the first half-mile, a pack of five--led by defending champion David Griffin of Westminster and including North Carroll High School runners Jonathan Hilbert, Mike Mullinix, Colin Fearns, and Tim Young--separated themselves from the rest of the one hundred fifty runner field.

During the second part of the out-and-back race, Griffin's repeated surges reduced the lead pack to two, and during the last two hundred meters Hilbert, who finished sixth in last week's Main Street Mile, outsprinted Griffin to the finish line. Griffin finished as the first masters runner, with a faster time than his winning time last year. Mullinix, Fearns, and Young finished in the top five, and Lance Woodward finished as the first senior (50 and over) runner.

North Carroll High School runner Amy Watson and Winters Mill High School runner Katie Griffin led the women's pack to the 2.5 kilometer turnaround, at which point Hursey moved ahead. Although Watson attempted to match Hursey's pace during the last mile, Hursey finished tenth overall with a forty-five second winning margin, as Watson managed to finish ahead of a rapidly closing Griffin for second place. Dayna Stitcher finished fourth as the first masters runner.
