FSK 5K & Kids' Dash
Staub, Leathers Capture Eagle 5K

Francis Scott Key High School students Steven Staub and Maggie Leathers captured the second running of the Eagle 5K, held on May 1 in Uniontown, to benefit the football and lacrosse programs at FSK.

Staub, who won the inaugural race last year, led the field of one hundred runners down Bark Hill Road, reaching the first mile mark in 5:40. Within ten seconds followed a pack containing masters runners Michael Fitzgerald, David Griffin, and Jim Shimberg, along with FSK runners Brian Leiter and Jared Welsh.

On the return portion of the out-and-back course, Staub continued to increase his lead, and by the time he reached the track for the last three hundred meters, his margin over Fitzgerald was the length of a football field. Finishing third was Griffin, followed by Leiter and Shimberg. Terry Monn of Gettysburg finished 16th as the first senior runner.

Maggie Leathers and Mairin Leahy, who together cover distances of 800 meters and longer for the FSK track team, reached the one mile mark in 7:00, with Chrissy Pennington and masters runners Margaret Horioka and Debra Leathers trailing by a minute. Leathers pulled away during the middle portion of the course to win by forty seconds over Leahy, who finished two minutes ahead of Pennington. Horioka nipped Debra Leathers at the finish line to place fourth, while Mindy Bacon finished eighth as the first senior runner.
