Loveland, McCubbin Capture Otterdale Mill Run Joe Loveland became the oldest runner to win a club race, and Tina McCubbin won the women's division by nearly a mile in the Otterdale Mill Run, held on October 26 in beautiful suburban Taneytown. Arriving just before race time and getting no warm up activity, Roger Kilgore led the field of fifteen through the first mile in a time of 6:50, with McCubbin, Loveland, Gary Honeman, and John Palks trailing at roughly five second intervals. During the second and third miles of the very flat and basically traffic-free course, Loveland slowly improved his standing, moving past McCubbin by the end of the second mile and holding a ten second lead over Kilgore by the end of the third mile. During the last two miles he doubled his lead, finishing the race with the only sub 7 minute mile pace. Winner of two club races in the past two months, Loveland, at age 54, is the oldest winner of a "regular fees" race in the nearly twenty-five years since the club's founding. Kilgore held on to second place during the last two miles, while McCubbin finished third overall as the first female, with a winning margin of over six minutes. She also was the only non-masters runner in the field. Palks, who caught Honeman at the end of the third mile, accelerated during the final stages to finish as the third male, trailed by Honeman and Frank Schaeffer, who passed several runners on the return portion of the course. Lainey Bernstein, accompanied by James Moreland, ran at a steady pace to set her own personal best for a five mile run as she finished as the second female, and Chris Reese uncorked another one of her pattened finish line surges to edge Liuda Galinaitis for third place. The next club race is the Caple's Cross-Country Caper, to be held at 12:00 noon on Sunday, November 2, at the Caple farm, located at the corner of MD Route 27 and Warfieldsburg Road, south of Westminster.
