Club members Dave Griffin and Kathleen Hertsch posted

commanding wins in the second annual Carroll Country YMCA

5K race, held on June 1.

 

At the start of the race, run on Old Washington Road

across from the YMCA, Westminster High School junior

Danny Velazquez grabbed the early lead, closely followed

by middle school runners Justin May-West and Timothy Young.

Griffin moved from fourth to second during the latter

portion of the first mile.  Velazquez, who passed the one

mile mark in 5:40, ten seconds ahead of Griffin and forty

seconds ahead of May-West and Young, continued to lead until

shortly after the turnaround point.  At this point Griffin

passed him, and with a mile to go, he had established a

fifteen second lead.  He continued to increase that lead

to thirty-five seconds at the finish line, which he crossed

in 18:57, breaking the master's record he set last year.

 

Velazquez finished in 19:32, almost two minutes ahead

of May-West, who was being pursued by senior runner and

club member Joe Loveland, who passed Young after the first

mile to move into fourth place.  Fifth place was captured

by Jim Beacham, who also passed Young during the second mile.

 

Both Loveland and May-West were being hotly pursued by

club member Kathleen Hertsch during the last stage of the race.

The East Middle School runner, who set a county record in the

eighth grade cross-county run on Thursday and who may play soccer

(sob) this fall at Winters Mill High School, recorded a time of

6:40 for the first mile, good for a five second lead over Sarah

Hardwick and a twenty-five second lead over Dawn Yarrington.

 

Shortly after the one mile mark, Hertsch quickly ended

the suspense over the identity of the female winner.  With a

mile to go, there was no competition in sight, and she was

in fifth place overall.  At the finish line her time of 21:36

was nearly four minutes faster than those of Hardwick and  

Yarrington, who barely outlasted Katie Griffin to finish

third.  Amy Morrow Funk finished fifth, and Carol

Williams finished seventh as the first masters.
