Esposito one second off own record, Pool dominates field

SYKESVILLE, Jan. 1 -- Sherry Esposito, Kevin Pool and 58 other finishers of the Winfield Mile on Tuesday helped the Westminster Road Runners Club start the year 2002 with a bang.

     Esposito, 23, who set the women's course record last year in 5:15, finished one second slower this year in 5:16. She passed the half-mile point in about 2:31 for a 2:45 second half. 

     Pool, meanwhile, on break from Allegheny (Pa.) College, led from start to finish with only Hereford High School track coach John Roemer IV giving chase. But Pool maintained a steady pace and won in 4:39, besting the 2001 winning time of 4:44. Roemer originally had plans to win, but plans changed rather quickly.

     "I've been running intervals the last few weeks really well and I thought I'd come out here today and be strong," said a somewhat disappointed Roemer, who finished second in 4:49. "I ran a  2-3 mile warm-up and didn't feel too great, and I knew I wouldn't be too strong then."

     South Carroll High runner Darrin Arbaugh was third in 5:12, followed by Neal Riemenschneider (5:14) and Esposito. 

Please pardon the mess. There were 60 finishers (one with no name) and 62 times posted. The first

25 times are certain. The final 15 or so are certainly not, however.
