Koons wins three gold medalsFifth grader wins 100 dash, 400 and 800by Kevin SpradlinWESTMINSTER, March 10 -- Fifth grader Nikolette Koons won three gold medals in the running festivities on the Western Maryland College track. The event was sponsored by the college's Running for Life group, a club dedicated to promoting the sport of running to people of all ages. Koons won the Grade 3-5 heat of the 100-meter dash in 16.02 seconds. Then, on 10 minutes' rest, won the combined 400-meter dash in 1:19, beating out middle schooler Megan Thomas on the homestretch by four seconds. Ten more minutes later, the combined 800-meter run started. Koons trailed only Charlie Clark (Grade 3-5) after one lap. With 300 meters to go, Koons sprinted for a lead of about 10 meters. Clark made a valiant effort to catch up, but couldn't overcome a 25-mph gust of wind on the final turn. Koons won in 3:19 while Clark was second in 3:32.
