WESTMINSTER, May 11 -- Maybe it was because part of his last name is also part of the race. Maybe it was because some of the other runners weren't quite ready. Or maybe it had nothing to do with anything other than the euphoria of a sunny day, a relatively flat course and a sweet coolness to the air on the calm Saturday morning.

     No matter the reason, Westminster resident Paul Miller pulled away from Alan Pobletts and James Moreland over the last two miles to win the Westminster Road Runners Club-sponsored Mill Run 4-miler in 24 minutes, 11 seconds. Pobletts was second in 24:25. Gary St. Onge overtook Moreland in the third mile to finish third in 24:32. Moreland was fourth in 24:57.

     Taneytown's Tina McCubbin was the first woman to cross the finish line, placing eighth overall in 26:56. Running by herself most of the time, she still managed to average 6:44 per mile. 

     From the start, Moreland took the lead with Miller and Pobletts following. After about a mile, though, it was clear Moreland wasn't up to his usual top performance and began to fade. Before the two-mile turnaround, St. Onge had passed Moreland and even made a chase for Pobletts. Miller, though, wouldn't be caught by anyone.
