NC track stars take Lynam 5K
Benefit run/walk draws more than 200 participants

HAMPSTEAD, April 20 -- True to the spirit of the Joanne Lynam Memorial 5K Run/Walk, North Carroll High School's J.T. Potter and South Carroll's Dan Reedy crossed the finish line at the same time on Saturday, putting a temporary restraint on their season-long rivalry on the track.
It wasn't until they reached the finish chute that the two agreed someone had to be crowned the winner, and Reedy, after a tough 17:04 5K at the Meade Stampede the day before, was more than happy to give it to him.
Officially, Potter finished in 18 minutes, 31 seconds to Reedy's 18:32. Masters runner David Griffin was third in 18:52 while two of Potter's teammates, Mike Mullinix (19:13) and Nathan Getty (19:44), rounded out the top five.
NC senior Cheryl Williams beat out teammate Amy King for the women's crown. Williams was 12th overall in 21:32 to King's 21:47 for 14th place. Katy Winemiller was third female in 21:55 and eighth-grader Kathleen Hertsch was the fifth female and 19th overall in 22:30.
From the moment registration and packet pick-up began, it was clear this race would be dominated by North Carroll students -- and not just runners. Many of the school's lacrosse players were "encouraged" to participate as well.
More than $1,100 was raised for the scholarship the Joanne Lynam Memorial Scholarship Fund which will be awarded to a graduating NC senior each year.
