WESTMINSTER, Aug. 18 -- Paul Hannsen and Sherry Esposito both notched impressive wins at the Kowomu Trail Run, held on August 18th and sponsored by the Westminster Road Runners. Hannsen, who recently won the Bachman Valley Ten Mile Run, the last race in this summer's Twilight Series, immediately grabbed the lead in the early part of the rolling out-and-back course. His time of 5:45 for the first mile gave him a forty second lead over Paul Miller and Jamie Kaiser, a member of the McDonough Cross-Country team that Hannsen coaches. Masters runners James Moreland and Gary St. Onge and lead female runner Esposito were the only other runners in the twenty-three runner field within a minute of Hannsen at that point. By the time Hannsen reached the three mile mark in 17:10, his lead over Miller had grown to nearly two minutes, and as he headed down the hills toward the finish, it grew to a final margin of nearly two and one-half minutes. Miller finished fifty seconds ahead of Kaiser, and St. Onge outran Moreland to finish fourth and claim masters bragging rights. Esposito, who recently won the women's short course title in the Twilight Series by winning all five races she entered, continued her winning ways by passing the one mile mark in 6:45, thirty seconds ahead of Tina McCubbin, who won the long course title this summer. Esposito maintained her sub-seven minute pace with a 20:13 time at three miles, and while she could not catch St. Onge and Moreland in the mad dash to the finish line, she finished sixth overall, with a two and one-half minute advantage over McCubbin. Sherry Clower moved past McDonough School runner Beth Links after the first mile to finish third, and Mira Foote, although claiming to be slowed by injury, increased her pace markedly after the first half-mile to finish as the first masters runner.
