Pool, Esposito pin Pleasant Valley 4-miler victories in TWS #2by David Herlocker Race Director: Liuda GalinaitisWESTMINSTER, June 20 -- Kevin Pool debuted and Team CMAC member Sherry Esposito continued to perform at a high level as winners of the Pleasant Valley Four Mile Run, the second 2002 Twilight Series run, held in and around Pleasant Valley on June 20.
Pool and Rick Kern of Frederick blasted to the front of the sixty runner field, with Pool's 4:50 first mile time giving him a ten second lead over Kern, with Paul Miller and Michael Replogle another thirty seconds behind.
Although the uphill second mile slowed Pool to a 5:35 pace, he continued to increase his lead over Kern. At the three mile point his time of 15:50 led Kern by twenty seconds, with Miller and Dave Griffin, who had passed Replogle, almost two minute behind.
At the finish Pool's time of 21:22 was good for a thirty-eight second win over Kern. Two minutes later Miller finished just ahead of first masters runner Griffin, with Replogle another twenty seconds back. Gary St. Onge finished tenth as the first senior runner, and Jacob Vigeveno rallied to finish as fifteenth male and seventeenth overall after arriving late, with no warmup and the entire field headed down the road.
As the head female of the field headed down the road, Esposito, whose winning streak in local races has now reached double digits, saw only male runners, as her 5:45 first mile time placed her thirty-five seconds ahead of Tina McCubbin, with Colleen Lawson, CMAC's Becky Alvarez and Jill Krebs, bunched behind McCubbin.
At the three mile mark, passed in 18:35, Esposito's lead was well over a minute, and she finished two minutes ahead of Krebs, who passed several runners on the return portion of the out-and-back course. McCubbin finished comfortably ahead of Alvarez, with Suzanne Ripley capturing fifth. CMAC charter member Mira Foote finished ninth as the first masters runner, and Dee Nelson finished eleventh as the first senior runner.
The next Twilight Series Race will be the Camp Hashawa Three Mile Trail Run, to be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 27, at Camp Hashawa, off Route 97 north of Westminster. The Trail Run will be preceded by two CMAC cross-country runs, starting at 6:30 pm.
