Carroll conquers 50-miler

WESTMINSTER, 11/19 -- Sam Alspach rounded out the effort of 10 Carroll County runners who completed the 39th Annual John F. Kennedy 50 Mile Ultra-Marathon on Saturday, Nov. 17.

     For the second straight year, Greg Zaruba was the first county finisher. Zaruba placed 15th out of 818 official finishers in 6 hours, 56 minutes, 58 seconds for an average of 8:21 per mile. Hampstead's Harry Placide was 84th with a time if 8:31:03, averaging 10:14 per mile. In 108th place was Francis Scott Key high schooler Steven Graybill in a time of 8:46:23, a pace of 10:32 per 5,280 feet. Don Meyer of Westminster finished 150th in 9:03:07 (averaging 10:52), followed by Kevin Spradlin (258th place, 9:46:14, 11:44 pace) and Frank Schaeffer (266th, 9:50:11, 11:49 pace). 

     The six county finishers, who placed in the top 1/3 of the complete list of finishers, was Carroll's best showing in JFK history.

     After night fell, Chris Carroll of Sykesville and Joseph Hall of Eldersburg finished just one second apart. Carroll placed 550th in 11:23:30 (13:41 pace) and Hall was 551st in 11:23:31. Sherri Hughes was 694th in 12:25:09 (14:55) and Alspach was 751st in 13:06:46 (15:45).
