Westminser, 12/16 -- In the Westminster Road Runners Club's final race of the year, Taneytown resident and club member Tina McCubbin was the first female to cross the finish line of the new Dancer Dash 10K, beating runner-up Jenny Caple by more than five minutes.

David Goucher was first overall in 37:58. David Griffin was second in 38:53 and Alan Pobletts was third in 39:22.

McCubbin, meanwhile, held a commanding one minute, 48-second lead on Caple at the water station just past the two mile point. McCubbin passed in 15:04 while Caple trotted by in 16:52. North Carroll high schooler Kim Daut was third in 17:04.

After the turnaround and shortly into the fifth mile, McCubbin passed the second water station in 28:46 -- an average of about 7 minutes per mile -- while increasing the margin over Caple to 10 seconds short of four minutes.

Caple was second and 14th overall, finishing in 48:41 while Daut was 17th overall in 51:06.

In the men's race, Goucher was joined by Pobletts, Griffin and Gary. St. Onge, with Goucher cruising through the first mile in 5:35. With about four miles to go, Goucher was first in 12:41, Pobletts was second in 13:30, Griffin was third in 13:41 and St. Onge fourth in 13:50.

Goucher hit the turnaround 5K point in 19:10 -- and he was the only one among the leaders prepared to run negative splits through the race. The eventual winner improved his position coming out of the woods and by the second water stop, held an insurmountable 65-second lead. Pobletts was just a few seconds ahead of Griffin (26:00 to 26:03) and St. Onge was fourth at 26:40. By the finish line, though, Griffin had passed Pobletts and finished in 38:53 to Pobletts' 39:22. Dave Hendrix passed St. Onge in the final stages of the race to finish fourth (40:18) to St. Onge's 40:41 (5th overall).

The field of 24 runners helped race director establish a new course. Prior to this year's race, runner's would start, finish and congregate for the awards ceremony on Lemmon Road. When heavy traffic became a concern, the race was moved to the parking lot of the F&M Building a short distance away. By default, the overall male and female winnners, along with the age group winners, all set course records for the new 10K race.

After the race, club president David Herlocker was presented with the Road Runners Club of America National Volunteer Award for 2001. Congratulations to you, David, and to all the runners of the 2001 Dancer Dash 10K.
