Event to be held on the
Chesapeake Bay’s western shore
Register for June 30
Summer meeting and fabulous outdoor barbeque
Upakrik Farm
420 E. Bay Front Road
Deale, Maryland 20751
There’s nothing like a summer day spent outdoors and on the water,
which is exactly the venue for the June 30 MCTA summer meeting, being held at
Upakrik Farm, which is owned
and operated by Frank and Clara Gouin, in Deale,
MD on the Chesapeake Bay’s fabulous western shore.
Since so many tree growers enjoyed last summer’s Pig Roast at the
Brown’s tree farm in Howard County, the Gouins – with the help of Fred
Clark and Kimberly Mangold who have booked Red Hot & Blue Catering
Services – have arranged for a delicious mid-day meal of barbeque chicken
and pulled pork with all the trimmings. There will also be plenty of cold
drinks, a veggie and fruit platter and cookies and brownies, so no one will go
hungry!
A continental breakfast with hot coffee and pastries will also be
provided during early morning registration at Upakrik Farm.
As to the day’s agenda, President Wayne Thomas says Dr. Gouin will be
giving fellow tree growers a “short course” on the numerous projects and
experiments he has undertaken on his tree farm. As a University of Maryland
Professor Emeritus, Dr. Gouin is a natural-born teacher, who has long shared
his knowledge and expertise with MCTA and Christmas tree growers over several
decades – both before and after he “retired” from the University. So
there’s no doubt, there will be plenty of information dispensed throughout
the day-long session.
During a farm tour, members will see Dr. Gouin’s small greenhouse and
cold frames for growing crops in the winter months, as well as his special
fruit tree ladders and trickle irrigation system for vegetables. In addition
to Canaan, Douglas and Nordman fir, white pine
and blue spruce Christmas
trees, the farm has 155 peach trees, oriental persimmons and blueberries.
Briefly, the day’s agenda looks
like this:
·
8 a.m. registration and continental breakfast
·
Herbicide application: sprayer calibration and calculations,
timing
·
Composting Christmas wreath and garland waste with horse
manure
·
Planting seedlings: comparing planting board, 6-inch augured
hole and 6-inch
augured hole amended with compost
·
Byran Butler: Insects and Diseases of Christmas Trees
·
Short Business Meeting
For those who want to enjoy the water and wildlife, the Gouins have
available
three canoes and a row boat. But bring your life preservers! There
is also a bevy
of wildlife, including bald eagles, ospreys, egrets and blue
herons.
Also bring your own folding chairs to augment limited on-site seating. But most importantly, just register and come visit Upakrik Farm for a very special
summer
MCTA event.
