State Highway will be putting the light on flash 24 hours as a trial basis. You will notice a parking pattern change on Main Street. Please try and work with SHA on this.
The lower town parking lot behind the drug store has been black topped. We are also looking for additional parking in the area of Main Street for the business.
Please take notice of all bus stops and children walking to school.
To all patients who have concerns about the doctors office, please, everyone who can should write letters to Frederick Memorial Hospital about the unfairness to the community since Dr. Cariofes retirement. They said that they would have a replacement and that has not happened. So please the more letters sent the better.
The Union Bridge Fall Fest will be September 15, 2001 at Lehigh. Please try to attend. Also the Town Funding Breakfast will start again in October. Anyone wishing to help please contact a committee member.

UNION BRIDGE PARK IMPROVEMENTS
The town has been approved for $43,000 in Maryland Program Open Space (POS) grant funds for July 1, 2001. These funds will be used to construct a new footbridge over little Pipe Creek and new
steps and handrails at the little baseball diamond. The town is also applying for an additional $35,000 in grant funds to install new playground equipment at the park. To finish up the town's 2000 POS grant program, new signs will be installed throughout the park.A Little Pipe Creek Park map, as well as copies of the POS applications, is available at the town office for review.
LITTLE PIPE CREEK PARK
Were waiting for final approval from the State Highway Administration (Federal Aid), and the Maryland Board of Public Works, before beginning construction of the walkway and footbridge in the Little Pipe Creek Park. We expect to receive the final go-ahead within three months.
MAIN STREET REVITALIZATIONRepresentatives from the town had a very productive meeting with State Highway Administration officials on August 8, 2001, regarding the Main Street design plans. The plans are now in the final design stage. Planned new improvements include road paving, sidewalks, curb, gutter, street signs, pressed brick crosswalks, decorative streetlights, parking meters, and patterned concrete sidewalks.
The Main Street Committee will be meeting to review several design alternatives for the patterned concrete sidewalks and street lamps. In addition, we will be designing new welcome signs for the north and south entrances into town. The next major step in the process is to secure final construction funding from the State Highway Administration. We will also submit a grant application to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
You may be wondering what decision was reached by the SHA regarding the towns traffic signal at Broadway. The State has decided that prior to removing the traffic signal altogether, it will install a 24-hour flashing signal for a three-month period beginning sometime in September 2001. This will allow the State to monitor the intersection, and analyze changes that will be installed to improve sight distance and visibility.
WATER IMPROVEMENTSArro Consulting Inc., town engineers, have completed the bid specifications for construction of a new elevated water tank at West Locust Street (to replace the existing tank), and several new water mains to be constructed in Main Street, Elger Street, Locust Street, White Street, and Lehigh Drive. These projects will be advertised for bids sometime in the next few weeks. Construction should begin in the early spring, depending on final approval from Rural Utilities Services, USDA, the funding agency.
SEWER EXTENSION
Final loan and grant funds have been approved by the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, for the extension of new public sewer service to North Main Street (north of the elementary school), Union Bridge Road, Bark Hill Road, and Honeysuckle Lane. Construction may begin in the late fall of 2001.
Information on these and other town projects may be obtained by calling the town office at 775-2711.
MOSQUITO CONTROL
The Maryland Department of Agriculture will be spraying for mosquitoes every other Wednesday evening, starting June 6, 2001. The spraying will occur between dusk and 10:30 p.m. If you wish to minimize exposure, bring in laundry, and close
windows. Remember dates and times that
spraying will be done. Spraying will be done when the air temperature is between 56 and 85 F. and the wind speed is 12 mph or less with no precipitation.
Please forward any comments, suggestions, or complaints to the Central Maryland Mosquito Control Office, 6701 Lafayette Ave., Riverdale, MD 20737, phone 301-927-8357, 410-876-4423 or 1-800-966-3877 ext. 4423
