UNION BRIDGE NEWSLETTER MAY/JUNE NEWSLETTER ARTICLES DUE IN CITY OFFICE

NOON, FRIDAY   June 15, 2001

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Spring is here and it’s time for cleaning up and mowing. Lets not forget that the town has laws pertaining to mowing and abandoned cars. Remember, that enforcing these rules cost money. The town sends notices to people by registered mail for record keeping practices, that way when a person gets a notice they can’t come back and say that they didn’t get it.

Don’t forget about the curfew ordinance. Ordinance #272 states that curfew hours during the week are from 10:00pm until 6:00am. Fines for violation of curfew are not less than $15.00, nor exceed $300.00. A citation may be issued to a minor who is in violation or a parent that permits a minor to be in any public place during curfew hours due to a lack of sufficient control.

Bike and skateboard riders will be reminded about helmets. This is for your own safety.

May will be the last breakfast for the Funding Committee until fall. I would like to thank all those people who helped at the breakfast and fixing things for the bake table.

May 30th will be the fireman’s parade. This year the parade route has changed. The town is asking for NO PARKING on North Main Street from North Main and Rt. 75 to Broadway, West Broadway to Whyte Street. Residents are asked not to park vehicles on these streets from 5pm until after the parade. Also, please do not put trash out until after the parade. Thank You.

UNION BRIDGE FIRE COMPANY PARADE COMMITTEE

THE Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual Fireman’s Carnival the week of May 28 through June 2. Each evening All-You-Can-Eat Buffet platters with salad bar will be available from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. There will also be nightly entertainment on the stage.

The big Firemen’s Parade is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30 at 7:00pm. This year there will be a new parade route. The parade will begin at the intersection of MD Route 75 and North Main Street. The parade will proceed south on Main Street to Broadway, make a right turn onto Broadway to Whyte Street, Left onto Whyte Street to Locust Street, Left onto Locust Street to Penrose Street, and right onto Penrose Street, ending in front of the Union Bridge Post Office. Spectators will be able to watch the parade from North Main Street, Broadway or Whyte Street.

Any business or organization wishing to participate in the parade, please contact the fire hall at (410) 775-7422 or e-mail BigBlaze82@aol.com.

We hope to see everyone at the carnival.

TOWN MASTER PLAN

The Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing for Thursday, June 14, 2001, at 6:30 p.m., in the town office, to hear comments and questions from citizens on the draft Union Bridge Master Plan Review 2000. A copy of the draft master plan is on display at the town office, and is available for review and inspection by the public.

The planning commission welcomes and encourages citizen comments regarding the proposed master plan update. A town plan update is required by Article 66 B of the Annotated Code of Maryland and Maryland Smart Growth legislation. A copy of the current town plan, adopted in 1990, is also available at the town office for review. The adopted plan will guide the growth and development of the town for several years into the future.

If you have any questions regarding the draft master plan or the public hearing process, please call Jim Schumacher at 410-775-2711.

PUBLIC NOTICE:

The town recently installed a new batting cage between the little ball diamond and the tennis courts on Thomas Street. Sometime in mid to late March, the safety netting was stolen. The netting, which cost $1,200.00, is dark green/black treated nylon, about 75’ long, 12’high, and 12’ wide, with 1 ¾" mesh squares.

In addition to its intended use, the stolen netting could be used as a pick up truck bed netting, hammock, cargo holder, bird cage and probably a host of other things.

If you have any information that could help us catch and prosecute this thief, please call Trooper Frank Childress, Westminster State Police Barracks, at 410-848-3111. Thank you for your help in this matter. If you have any questions, call the town office at 410-775-2711.
