In 1776 the Declaration of Independence was adopted. However, it was not until 1781 that the last person, Thomas McKean from Delaware, signed the document. It was almost 300 years earlier in 1492 that Christopher Columbus, for whom our Order is named, discovered America. Many other significant events took place between 1492 and 1776 that help to shape and form our nation. In 1609 on an expedition of discovery, Samuel de Champlain and his Huron allies battled a band of Iroquis on the Ticonderoga Peninsula in present day New York. That same year Hendrick Hudson was the first to explore the Hudson River as far north as present day Albany, New York. In 1620 the Mayflower lands at Plymouth Rock, MA with the Pilgrims. In 1770 the Boston Massacre, where British troops fire on Bostonians throwing snowballs will be a rallying cry through the Revolutionary years. |
