Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton
Born: 1774 -- Died: 1821 -- Profession: Married Woman, Religious
St. Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Ann Bayley in New York City. She was well educated and always showed unusual care for the poor. She was married in 1794 to William Seton, with whom she had five children. After his death from illness while they were Italy, she returned to this country ready to convert to Catholicism. Seton converted in 1805. Under the guidance of the Sulpicians she founded a school for girls in Baltimore, MD. St. Elizabeth later moved the order she founded to Emittsburg, MD where she formed the Sisters of Charity in 1813. Seton is most known for having laid the foundation for what is now the parochial school system in this country. She was canonized in 1975 by Pope Paul VI, becoming the first American-born saint.
