History of Assembly #379
- On May 4, 1952 , the first officers were installed into Westminster Assembly No. 1393 by the Faithful Master, Charles B. Humelsine:
- Flag for the new assembly at that time were presented and donated by the Charles Carroll of Carrollton Assembly and were received by Faithful Friar Fr. James Dwyer. All the officers, members, and quests marched on St. John's Church, Westminster, for blessing and benediction. Refreshments were served after the return from the church.
- The assembly has had many undertakings: Helping to raise money to build a new rectory at St. John's of Westminster: the rehabilitation of inmates at Springfield Hospital, Sykesville; helping to raise money to build the Carroll County Hospital through a series of dances, raffles, and home round-robin parties; and a project of presenting toys at Christmas time at the Rosewood Training School at Owings Mills.
- On January 1, 1956 the Westminster Assembly #1393 was changed to the James Cardinal Gibbons Assembly #379. After much discussion and searching, the Assembly decided to meet on the fourth Monday monthly at the former Westminster Moose home on Main Street in downtown Westminster. The building became the home of Westminster Council #1393 for a number of years.
- The Assembly has participated in the living rosary, and assisted at many Council installations with it's Color Corps in recent years. Attendance in full regalia by the Color Corps at Memorial Day Parades in Westminster, Flag Day ceremonies and Columbus Day parades in recent time has generated a renewed influx of new member concerned with patriotism and love of country.
- In 1987, the Assembly won the coveted Master's Bell with the largest number and percentage of new member's in the First Maryland District, Calvert Province, under Faithful Navigator, William J. Norton and again had the largest percentage of new members in 1988 under Faithful Navigator, Michael J. Wineke. Success has been attributed to a bonding between District Councils with the great fraternity and unity Past Grand Knights and Third Degree members. Regular Council visits by a membership team of Past Faithful Navigators explaining the history and purpose of the Fourth Degree has been the reason for much or the recent success.
