1985 Caldecott
Hodges, Margaret.  Saint George and the Dragon.  Illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman.  Boston: Little, Brown, 1984.

The author retells the part of Spenser’s Fairie Queene when George, the Red Cross Knight, must slay a deadly dragon. The dragon is “laying waste” to the homeland of the fair maiden, Una. The flying dragon has sharp claws and teeth. Only George, with his shining shield and his trusty sword, has the courage to face this menacing monster. (AB)
